Optimizing and Writing your LinkedIn Profile

by Kim on May 1, 2017

In addition to using your executive resume as a key component of your job search, think of LinkedIn as an additional career marketing document that can easily generate greater interest in what you have to offer. The more interesting your Linkedin Profile is, the better your chances of being noticed.

If you already have a LinkedIn profile, you might want to review it to ensure that it reflects not only your career history but more importantly, that it’s actually read. You need your profile to be easily found and also compelling enough for readers to better understand what you can offer. You should also commit to minding your profile on a regular basis, tweaking when necessary as your career, areas of expertise and accomplishments grow or change over time.

The first thing you want to nail down is your Professional Headline, as this will likely be read first after your name. Don’t use the default headline; instead, customize this space to truly represent your primary areas of expertise and skills. If you’re a “Healthcare Professional” for example, you can take that description a step further and, instead, focus on key skill sets (also known as key words). An example headline could be something like “Rehabilitation / Home Health / Orthopedics / Medical-Surgical Expert,” which immediately differentiates you from “just” a Healthcare Professional.

Additionally, you’ll want to review and/or redevelop your summary section to further garner interest in your background. Since this is in the beginning of the LinkedIn profile, it’s very important that this becomes a key “attention generator.” This is where you can focus on your accomplishments, your unique brand offerings and ability to utilize your unique skills to drive results.

There are other areas that you’ll want to address if they haven’t been already, which include the Skills and Endorsement section, Volunteering, Honors & Awards, Organization Memberships, etc. Fill in as much as you can with valuable content and you’ll likely see a boost in your overall visibility and opportunities. When you combine the use of an interesting LinkedIn profile with a compelling executive resume, your professionalism and attention to detail will further cement the fact that you are a serious candidate.
